Bulls GD Review: Rd 2 2017
Round two was against Mornington at Dolphs Park had the hallmarks of a close contest with the bulls pre-game preparation on point and ready to make it two from 2. The game started exactly as the previous with the opposition scoring the first two 2 goals before we ventured inside our forward 50 a further 3 goals to our 1 for the quarter told the story with our turn overs costing us 4 of their 5 goals of the quarter, as a team we had to regroup and reset at quarter time with the coach highlighting the need to clean up the execution and increase their work rate at the stoppages which intern saw the Bulls outscore Mornington in the 2nd. With Jake Kelly dangerous up forward & Pobbs & Lord who were being creative from each wing allowed us to narrow the difference and head in at half time only 21 points down.
The 3rd quarter again saw the bulls start cost us but with the boys relentless pressure and willingness to hang in the game saw us hit the scoreboard with four goals into a slight wind, Ashcroft and the skipper laying numerous tackles with Burke and the 100 game utility in Proud making better use of the ball had us within 18 points at ¾ time.
With momentum and the aid of a slight breeze the boys were ready to take the game away from Mornington but they had other ideas and scored the first 4 goals of the final quarter to put us out the game, to the guys credit we fought out the game and continued to demonstrate strong discipline and implement new learnings within our game plan.
Rhys Pierce showed some good form up forward Jake finished with 4 goals, Proud finally got the better of their big man and our ability to move the ball quickly on occasions were all encouraging.
More consistent players on the day were – VanRaay, Proud, Kelly, Lord.
We will regroup and review the areas we can improve in knowing the main focuses won’t change but maybe highlighted a little more.
Big things await starting with this coming round.
The reserves side took on Mornington at our new home ground at Frankston, We went in a little undermanned but still confident we could have a good result. We started ok, our pressure was good but we couldn’t get any flow or run through the middle of the ground. We got caught ball watching a little and ended up going into qtr time a couple of goals down.
The second qtr we got plenty of the ball, our half backline was playing well with Jason Hinde and TK solid but we couldn’t get any deep entries into our forward line. Jordy Jones was having a big influence, and Darcy and Benno really started to work into the game. we held our own but was still 16 points down at half time. The 3rd qtr was the same as the 2nd, we had a lot of the ball, we were winning plenty of the ball in the contest but we missed a couple of easy shots in front of goal which meant we couldn’t put enough scoreboard pressure on them.
The last qtr was fairly even, we were down to 1 fit guy on the bench which hurt our rotations but the guys kept running it out to the end. Jordy, Chris M and Matt B, continued to work hard. In the end we went down by just over 5 goals.
I don’t think we are that far away from a win, we had a few simple skill errors which hurt us but I’m confident we can turn it around by continuing to get to training. Best players for the day were Jordy, Phippsy, Darcy, Matt B and Benno.
Congratulations to Taz on playing his 200th club game.
Was great to be on Frankston deck with the sun out but for some reason council decided to water the oval overnight which made conditions slippery. A very slow start but worked into the game well, Murray continued his great form along with Baker and Beau in the middle yet our forwards couldn’t finish off the work.
Saunders, Cassera and Holton repelled plenty in the back half to make scoring difficult and we worked into the game well.
We lead at every change to never be threatened but still plenty to work on in the coming weeks.
