Bulls GD Review: Rd 1 2017
Round 1 and a new look Bulls team took on our neighbours Langwarrin in a physical and sometimes scrappy affair, our start didn’t go to plan with Langy kicking the first two goals of the game within 6 minutes but our new look backline held there nerve and repelled numerous forward 50 entries. Our mids who were a little slow out of blocks were starting to have some influence at the stoppages through the likes of Dammo and the evergreen Bourke whilst our forwards were well held on the scoreboard but made sure their pressure on their opponents didn’t go unnoticed.
The second quarter started well for the Bulls with some centre clearances allowing our forwards to work into some clean space with Jake Kelly slotting an inspiring goal and Blake Simpson finishing of some good work kicking another goal in quick time allowing us to go into half time slightly up on the scoreboard with the challenge ahead.
After the coach highlighted the importance of the 3rd quarter and reinforcing the message to play to our structure the boys displayed the footy we are sure to see more of this season, our forwards were creative and the mids were well on top of their Langy opponents with the backs dominating led by Dizzy and Izzy sore us put on 5 goals into the breeze and up @ ¾ time. At this stage the game was played in windy but sunny conditions with the aid of a 3 goal breeze but within 5 minutes of the last quarter the conditions turned for the worst with Langy again having the aid of 4 goal wind and our backs were against the wall with Pig sidelined and big Izz out of action we were down to 20 but we didn’t panic and won more contested footy and used the defensive side of the ground perfectly to record our first win of the season.
With 10 new players in the side it was a pleasing start with heaps of room for improvement moving forward. More consistent players on the day were Frey, Doucher, Bourke & Dizzy and our fitness.
Next week’s challenge Mornington @ Dolph park
The reserves side traveled down the road to Langwarrin with a new look side, and hot conditions we were looking to start the season well. We started off ok with Taz winning just about every hit out, and Hadley and Darcy starting well. We couldn’t however put any scoreboard pressure on. We tried to get a bit more run and flow out of the Backline in the second qtr, Jason Hinde and Jordy Jones were working hard, we seemed to work the ball well to center half forward but a couple of costly turnovers at half forward let them run down and score some easy goals.
The 3rd qtr we tried to go more long and direct, Tim Crespin was providing a super target up forward and was marking everything, however we didn’t get it in there enough to put enough pressure on the opposition. By the last qtr we lost Rhys and Boz to injury and were starting to run out of legs, our defence was under the pump but still trying hard, In the end we went down by just over 10 goals. It was disappointing, but with a lot of new players it’ll take a couple of weeks for us to gel
Best players for the day were Jordy, Chrisso, Tim Crespin and Jase Hinde. It is super important that we all get to training as much as we can, as this week we will be looking to bounce back hard with a win against Mornington!
Go Bulls, Oz.
No one likes pre season let’s be honest so was good to get going again. We were on early into a breeze and used the ball well yet battled to kick a score. Was the story of our day, ball use terrific in windy conditions and played some exciting footy but the goals didn’t come often enough.
Hinde and Mcinnes controlled the wings and Baker, Beau and Ollie were getting it done in the middle. Our back 6 were tight all day with Cassera, Saunders, Holton and Zane continually setting us up. The Macca boys provided super pressure up forward along with Waddell which was the highlight for me on the day.
Great start to the year winning by 15 points but still plenty to work on
